Metta Sutta (Discourse on Loving-kindness)

1. 1

   Karaṇīyam attha-kusalena, yaṃ taṃ santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca; Sakko ujū ca sūjū ca, sūvaco c’assa mudu anatimānī.

   Ai mong đạt an lạc tối thượng, nên sống thiện lành, ngay thẳng, khiêm nhường, dễ dạy, mềm mỏng, không kiêu ngạo.

   Whoever seeks the state of peace should be skilled in good, upright, humble, gentle, easy to instruct, and free from pride.

2. 2

   Santussako ca subharo ca, appakicco ca sallahuka-vutti; Santindriyo ca nipako ca, appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho.

   Biết đủ, dễ nuôi, ít bận rộn, sống giản dị, giữ tâm an tĩnh, khéo léo, không phô trương, không dính mắc gia đình.

   Content, easily supported, with few duties, living simply, with calm senses, wise, not arrogant, and not attached to families.

3. 3

   Na ca khuddaṃ samācare kiñci, yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ; Sukhino vā khemino hontu, sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

   Không làm điều nhỏ nhặt khiến người trí chê trách. Nguyện mọi loài đều được an vui, an toàn, hạnh phúc.

   Let one not do even the slightest wrong that the wise would censure. May all beings be happy, safe, and at ease.

4. 4

   Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā; Dīghā vā ye mahantā vā, majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā.

   Dù là sinh linh nào: yếu hay mạnh, lớn hay nhỏ, dài hay ngắn, to hay nhỏ, tất cả không trừ ai.

   Whatever living beings there may be—weak or strong, large or small, long or short, subtle or gross—without exception.

5. 5

   Diṭṭhā vā yeva addiṭṭhā, ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre; Bhūtā vā sambhavesī vā, sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

   Những ai đã thấy hay chưa thấy, ở gần hay ở xa, đã sinh hay sắp sinh, nguyện tất cả đều được an vui.

   Those seen or unseen, those dwelling far or near, those born or yet to be born—may all beings be happy.

6. 6

   Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha, nātimaññetha katthaci naṃ kañci; Byārosanā paṭighasaññā, nāññamaññassa dukkham iccheyya.

   Đừng ai lừa dối hay khinh thường người khác, dù ở đâu. Đừng mong ai đau khổ, dù chỉ trong ý nghĩ.

   Let none deceive or despise another anywhere. Let none, through anger or ill-will, wish harm upon another.

7. 7

   Mātā yathā niyaṃ puttaṃ, āyusā ekaputtam anurakkhe; Evampi sabbabhūtesu, mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.

   Như mẹ hiền bảo vệ con một bằng cả mạng sống, hãy trải tâm từ vô lượng đến tất cả chúng sinh.

   Just as a mother would protect her only child with her own life, so should one cultivate boundless loving-kindness to all beings.

8. 8

   Mettaṃ ca sabbalokasmiṃ, mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ; Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca, asambādhaṃ averaṃ asapattam.

   Hãy trải tâm từ vô lượng khắp thế gian, trên, dưới, ngang, không giới hạn, không oán thù, không hận địch.

   Let one radiate boundless loving-kindness throughout the world—above, below, and all around—unobstructed, without hatred or enmity.

9. 9

   Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno vā, sayāno vā yāvat’assa vigatamiddho; Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya, brahmam etaṃ vihāraṃ idhamāhu.

   Dù đứng, đi, ngồi hay nằm, khi tỉnh táo, hãy giữ tâm niệm này. Đây là hạnh sống cao quý nhất.

   Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, as long as one is awake, let one sustain this mindfulness. This, they say, is the highest dwelling.

10. 10

    Diṭṭhiñca anupagamma, sīlavā dassanena sampanno; Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṃ, na hi jātu gabbhaseyyaṃ punaretīti.

    Không dính mắc vào tà kiến, giữ giới, thấy rõ chân lý, dứt tham ái dục, sẽ không còn sinh vào bào thai nữa.

    Not clinging to wrong views, virtuous, endowed with insight, having removed greed for sensual pleasures, one is not born again in a womb.
