About this text
The Maṅgala Sutta (Discourse on Blessings) is a renowned sutta from the Sutta Nipāta, often recited during New Year, Tết, or peace-seeking ceremonies. The Buddha lists 38 supreme blessings, guiding practitioners toward happiness, peace, and spiritual progress.
Preparation & offerings
Before reciting, offer incense, flowers, and pure water at the Triple Gem altar. Maintain a calm mind, wear respectful clothing, sit upright, and chant with sincerity.

Evaṃ me sutaṃ. Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
Tôi nghe như vầy: Một thời, Đức Thế Tôn trú tại Sāvatthi, trong vườn Kỳ Đà, nơi của ông Anāthapiṇḍika.
Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ Jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi.
Lúc ấy, một vị thiên nữ vào lúc đêm khuya, với ánh sáng rực rỡ chiếu sáng toàn bộ vườn Kỳ Đà, đến gần Đức Thế Tôn, đảnh lễ Ngài rồi đứng sang một bên.
Then, late at night, a certain radiant deva illuminated all of Jeta’s Grove, approached the Blessed One, paid homage, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā Bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Đứng sang một bên, vị thiên nữ ấy thưa với Đức Thế Tôn bằng bài kệ:
Standing to one side, that deva addressed the Blessed One in verse:

Bahū devā manussā ca maṅgalāni acintayuṃ, Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṃ brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Nhiều chư thiên và loài người suy nghĩ về những điều phước lành, mong cầu an lạc. Xin Ngài hãy dạy điều phước lành tối thượng.
Many devas and humans have pondered blessings, desiring well-being. Please tell us, what is the highest blessing?

Asevanā ca bālānaṃ paṇḍitānañca sevanā, Pūjā ca pūjanīyānaṃ etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Không gần gũi người ác, thân cận bậc hiền trí, tôn kính người đáng kính – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Not associating with fools, associating with the wise, honoring those worthy of honor—this is the highest blessing.

Patirūpadesavāso ca pubbe ca katapuññatā, Attasammāpaṇidhi ca etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Ở nơi thích hợp, đã tạo phước lành từ trước, tự rèn luyện bản thân – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Living in a suitable place, having done good deeds in the past, and setting oneself in the right direction—this is the highest blessing.

Bāhusaccañca sippañca vinayo ca susikkhito, Subhāsitā ca yā vācā etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Học rộng, có nghề nghiệp vững chắc, rèn luyện giới hạnh, nói lời chân thật – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Having much learning and skill, being well-trained in discipline, and speaking well—this is the highest blessing.

Mātāpitu upaṭṭhānaṃ puttadārassa saṅgaho, Anākulā ca kammantā etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Chăm sóc cha mẹ, nuôi dưỡng vợ con, làm việc không rối loạn – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Caring for one’s parents, supporting spouse and children, and engaging in peaceful work—this is the highest blessing.

Dānañca dhammacariyā ca ñātakānañca saṅgaho, Anavajjāni kammāni etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Bố thí, sống đúng pháp, giúp đỡ bà con, làm việc không lỗi lầm – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Giving, living righteously, supporting relatives, and doing blameless deeds—this is the highest blessing.

Āratī viratī pāpā majjapānā ca saṃyamo, Appamādo ca dhammesu etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Tránh xa điều ác, không rượu chè, siêng năng trong pháp lành – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Avoiding evil, refraining from intoxicants, and being diligent in the Dhamma—this is the highest blessing.

Gāravo ca nivāto ca santuṭṭhī ca kataññutā, Kālena dhammasavanaṃ etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Kính trọng, khiêm hạ, biết đủ, biết ơn, lắng nghe giáo pháp đúng lúc – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Respect, humility, contentment, gratitude, and timely hearing of the Dhamma—this is the highest blessing.

Khantī ca sovacassatā samaṇānañca dassanaṃ, Kālena dhammasākacchā etaṃ maṅgalamuttamaṃ.
Nhẫn nhục, dễ dạy, gặp gỡ bậc xuất gia, bàn luận giáo pháp đúng lúc – đó là phước lành tối thượng.
Patience, obedience, seeing ascetics, and timely discussion of the Dhamma—this is the highest blessing.
