Đá Trắng Pagoda

Đắk Lắk(formerly Phú Yên)(Chùa Đá Trắng)

Overview & history

Đá Trắng Pagoda (Bạch Thạch Tự) is located to the north of Nhơn Mỹ Bridge in Tuy An District, Phú Yên Province, adjacent to National Highway 1A. Built on the slope of Đá Trắng Mountain, the pagoda is named Bạch Thạch Tự.

History of the Pagoda

In 1793, Zen Master Pháp Chuyên (Diệu Nghiêm) came here and built a thatched hermitage to translate the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. Four years later, he constructed a grand thatched-roof pagoda.

In 1889, the pagoda was granted an imperial decree by King Thành Thái.

In 1929, the pagoda suffered a fire, and a fundraising campaign was launched everywhere for major restoration.

Specialties

The Đá Trắng mangoes within the pagoda grounds, when ripe, are bright yellow, sweet, and delicately fragrant. During the Nguyễn dynasty, these were tribute offerings to the king. Every year at the Đoan Ngọ festival, Phú Yên Province had to present between 1,000 and 2,000 mangoes to the king.
